Catherine, Sophia & Sarah, Roy

This was such an interesting picture to plan and paint. Catherine gave birth to her Stanley only a few days after her final sitting. I then painted Roy while we waited for Sophia’s Sarah to arrive. I got Roy’s life story in three afternoon episodes – swimming the Channel several times in his 60s was the least of his achievements. Sarah was seven weeks old when it was her turn to be painted. She made an important contribution to the work, but it washed off quite easily.
